Portfolio: Projects: Congo

In the summer of 2003, I traveled with a Rivers of the World (ROW) missionary trip to the town of Lusambo in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The objectives of the trip were to run medical clinics, teach about Christianity, and rebuild a boat that local ROW agents had sabotaged after it fell into the hands of rebels.

Just a junior in college at the time, it was an opportunity for travel, adventure, and to photograph. What sticks with me most from that trip was how people manage to carve normalcy out of even the most difficult conditions. Witnessing such resilience inspired me to return to Kenya to shoot a photo documentary on a Fulbright Fellowship the following year.
